The Canadian Aerophilatelic Society is run entirely by a small executive of long-serving volunteers, each of whom is also an accomplished collector, researcher, exhibitor, or editor in their own right.
President Steve Johnson provides the society’s overall leadership, chairs the AGM and executive meetings, and represents the CAS to the RPSC, AAMS, BNAPS, and FISA — the international federation of aerophilatelic societies of which the CAS is a member club. Steve founded the CAS website in 2006 and remains an active exhibitor and researcher.
Vice-President and Western Chapter Representative Dave Bartlet, who stepped up at the ORAPEX 2026 AGM after many years as CAS webmaster, deputizes for the President, coordinates the society’s presence at Western Canadian shows, and helps steer strategic initiatives such as the ongoing WordPress migration of the society website.
Secretary-Treasurer Brian Wolfenden is the operational hub of the CAS: he keeps the membership rolls (currently 146 members, per the ORAPEX 2026 AGM), welcomes new members, manages society finances and dues (year-end 2025 bank balance $23,046.15), maintains the full-colour PDF mailing list of The Canadian Aerophilatelist, and answers day-to-day member correspondence.
Past-President Chris Hargreaves continues to shape the society’s published output as Editor of the quarterly journal The Canadian Aerophilatelist — a role he has held for decades — and as coordinating editor of the joint CAS/AAMS reference The Air Mails of Canada and Newfoundland (AMCN2, 2022) and its ongoing Supplement; he also chairs the BNAPS Air Mail Study Group and co-hosts the annual Day of Aerophilately in Toronto.
Webmaster Marc Castel, appointed at ORAPEX 2026, is rebuilding the CAS’s web presence on WordPress publishing back issues of the journal online, and adding new digital resources such as searchable indexes, recorded presentations, and the AMCN USB.
Layout Editor Paul Balcaen designs and produces each issue of the journal in full colour, and Associate Contributors Tom Reyman and Ian Macdonald provide regular editorial support.
Member at Large Walter Herdzik(Calgary) helps ensure that the society has an active presence in Western Canada, staffing the CAS table at CALTAPEX and other regional shows, promoting aerophilatelic exhibiting, and bringing regional research back into the society’s publications and meetings.
The society acknowledges with gratitude the recent passing of four long-time contributors — Dick McIntosh, Derek Rance, John Irvine, and Gord Mallett — whose editorial, exhibiting, and indexing work over many decades shaped the CAS into what it is today, and it welcomes new volunteers to take up roles including Index Editor and additional Members at Large.
