About the journal

The Canadian Aerophilatelist is the quarterly journal of the Canadian Aerophilatelic Society (CAS), published without interruption since Issue No. 1 on 1 July 1985 (CAS Journal Index). Every issue is produced in full colour and distributed as an emailed PDF, with a paper edition available by subscription. Contributions from members and non‑members alike are welcome — the editor states in each issue, “All members are invited to contribute to each newsletter”.

Publication schedule and deadlines

The journal is published quarterly in March, June, September, and December. Copy deadlines for each issue are printed in the “Next Issue” notice of the preceding issue. The pattern established by the editor is roughly one month before publication:

What to send

The editor welcomes:

• Feature articles on Canadian and international aerophilately, postal history, first‑flight and semi‑official covers, airmail rates and routes, pilot signatures, and related aviation history.
• Astrophilately — an explicit area of CAS interest since founding.
• Short notes, discoveries, and new listings — including additions or corrections to The Air Mails of Canada and Newfoundland (AMCN2).
• Book reviews of new aerophilatelic and aviation‑history titles.
• Letters to the Editor. Correspondence intended for publication should be clearly marked “for Letters to the Editor”; the editor’s stated policy is not to publish private correspondence without the writer’s consent.
• Questions for the “Information Wanted” column — mystery covers, unexplained handstamps, unusual routings, etc. Members with information respond in later issues.
• Sales and Wants notices — free of charge for members: “All members are invited to send in details of items wanted or for sale to the editor. They will be published as soon as space permits, at no charge to the member”.
• Contributions to the annual Seasonal Special (December issue): one page featuring a favourite stamp or cover, with your name and — if you wish — a seasonal greeting to other members (TCAP No. 80; TCAP No. 60, September 2004).

Scans and photocopies of covers, stamps, or manuscript pages are all acceptable for review; the editor has for many years welcomed material “in any form you can send it”.

Publication guidelines

• The journal has no formal length limit for feature articles. For the “Seasonal Special,” items are limited to a maximum of two pages so that as many contributors as possible can be included.
• No specific word‑processing format is mandated in the journal. In practice, plain text, Microsoft Word (.doc/.docx), and PDF are all handled by the editor and the layout editor.
• Please supply your name and preferred contact information with each submission so the editor can follow up on queries.
• If you cite other publications, catalogues, or auction records, please include full citations (author, title, publication, date, page). Published articles routinely include numbered references and inline source notes — for example, the reference to Dan Barber’s “AAMS 75th Anniversary 1923–1998: Part III: The Conrath Decade 1931–1942,” The Airpost Journal, August 1998, in TCAP No. 129.

Images

The journal’s one explicit technical requirement concerns images. As stated in the “Next Issue” notice of every recent issue:

“For images, make high res tifs/jpegs — 300 dpi.”

Practical guidance drawn from that requirement:

• Supply images as separate TIFF or JPEG files at 300 dpi, not embedded inside a Word document. Embedded images are compressed and typically fall below print quality.
• Scan covers, stamps, and postmarks at actual size or larger at 300 dpi. Full‑cover scans at 300 dpi should be roughly 2000 × 1200 pixels or larger.
• Colour scans are welcome — the journal has been produced in full colour since Issue No. 99 and is distributed as a colour PDF.
• Include a caption for each image, keyed to the text by figure number or by an obvious reference in the caption itself.

Copyright and permission

Every issue of The Canadian Aerophilatelist carries the following notice on its masthead:

“Anybody who wants to copy an item from this journal is welcome to do so. Please acknowledge The Canadian Aerophilatelist as the source, and send a copy of the publication in which the reprinted material appears to the editor.”

By submitting material to The Canadian Aerophilatelist, contributors are understood to grant the CAS the right to publish that material in the journal, on aerophilately.ca, and in any subsequent CAS or joint CAS/AAMS reference work (such as The Air Mails of Canada and Newfoundland). Contributors are responsible for obtaining permission for any third‑party images or quoted material they include.

There is no honorarium for contributions.

Advertising

Members may become Advertising Members for an additional $25 Canadian per year over their regular dues. Advertising Members are guaranteed an advertisement in each issue, sized at the editor’s discretion depending on space; very large advertisements can be placed by special arrangement for an additional charge. Editorial review and layout

Submissions are reviewed by the editor, Chris Hargreaves, who has edited The Canadian Aerophilatelist since 1994. Layout and production are handled by Layout Editor Paul Balcaen (paulbalcaen@gmail.com). The editor may edit submissions lightly for length, clarity, and consistency and will confirm any substantive changes with the author before publication. If an item cannot be accommodated in the intended issue, it will be held for a future issue.

Recognition — the Canadian Aerophilatelist Editor’s Award

Each year the CAS presents the Canadian Aerophilatelist Editor’s Award for outstanding research and contributions to the journal. Recent recipients include Dr. Robert Galway (2023), for his research on 1920s Canadian airmail flights, and Marc Castel (2025), for his study of the 1927 London‑to‑London flight and its semi‑official stamp (Canadian Stamp News, 2023; Canadian Stamp News, 2025). The award is presented each spring at the CAS Annual General Meeting at ORAPEX in Ottawa.
